In the Middle Ages, it was common to name a street after its function or the economic activity that took place in it. And with some of these names, I really don’t want to know what was going on there…

Here are some examples but beware, not for the faint of heart!

Cock Lane, EC1
Cock Pond, SW4
Laycock Street, N1
Balls Pond Road, N1
Bird-in-Hand Passage, SE23
Bellenden Road, SE15
Hookers Road, E17
Fanny Hands Land
Clitterhouse Road, NW2
Back Passage, EC1
Swallow Street, W1
The Butts and Upper Butts, TW8 (my favorite, makes me think of the under boob trend a few years back)
White Knobs Way, CR3
Penistone Road, SW16
Cold Blow Lane, SE14
Cumming Street, N1

Was this all the reason for the Bleeding Heart Yard, EC1?
